Bird watching in Papua New Guinea
Depart Hotel around 4:30 am and visit the National Park outside of town to see the dancing of Raggiana Bird of Paradise.
Around 5:30, arrive at the dancing points, set field scope, camera and wait patiently until the birds arrive. By 6:00, a male bird starts calling for others, but no response.. it looks like others are not ready. The male will wait few minutes to make an another call.
This time, another male responds by calling back.
It is until 6:30 when all the males and females are ready for the show.
When the show starts, main actor bird will fly into the “stage tree”, singing and flapping his long feathers, showing off how he can dance beautifully and sing nicely.
Audiences are female Birds of Paradise.
Once the dance finishes, he will fly away and wait for another male to come and dance before he performs an another dance.
The show will last for an hour +, depending on the response from the audience
(not a human being).......
There are more than 700 species of birds in Papua New Guinea,
that includes 38 species of Bird of Paradise and 22 Species of Kingfishers, not to mention colorful Parrots/Lorikeets family.
There are abundant birds life across the country, but due to infrastructure problem, access to remote area is limited.
Also important point is local guide who knows where we can see the birds.
But there are not so many guides who can show the birds.
Due to the above factors, only few sites are recommended for bird watching tour
at this stage. - Mt Hagen, Kiunga/Tabubil, Kimbe Bay and Port Moresby.
You can combine those destinations to enjoy birds of Lowlands to Highlands,
Swamp area, Rainforest, and Seashores.
According to what you want to see, we can arrange best sites and guides
for you.
Enjoy a lifetime bird watching trip to Papua New Guinea with us !
